Nokia Maps gives turn-by-turn walking navigation to all

March 20th, 2012

The Nokia Maps mobile site now offers voice-guided turn-by-turn walking navigation to any device with a mobile browser, including the iPhone.

Introduced last year, the Nokia Maps mobile site, m.maps.nokia.com, has pretty much been the Google Maps knock-off that nobody knew about. It has given mobile users the ability to search for places, get directions and share items with friends — all fairly standard stuff. But starting today, the Nokia Maps mobile site may have differentiated itself, as it now offers voice-guided, turn-by-turn walking navigation for all, something that Google’s mobile site doesn’t provide.

In order to use the navigation, all you have to do is go to m.maps.nokia.com, give it permission to access your location and agree to a short Terms of Service sheet. Then, whether you’re on an iPhone, iPad, Nokia smartphone or any other device with a mobile browser, Nokia Maps will be able to shout out directions as you walk.

My question is, why only walking navigation? I mean sure, iOS users in particular should be happy to be getting any turn-by-turn navigation at all, but I can’t think of many use case scenarios that call for this. Except maybe biking? Or maybe it’s a cold day, and you’d rather store your phone in your beanie than hold it out in front of you? In any case, it’s still something. And it could be that Nokia is just testing the waters before releasing its driving navigation feature. Let’s hope that’s what it is.

Nokia to discontinue mobile money service

March 17th, 2012

In spite of facing stiff competition from local manufacturers, Nokia has well managed to hold its market share in India. It recently launched its mobile payment service, Nokia Money in India. With the new service, Nokia was said to have moved past its rivals in terms of consolidating its base in the country. However, in a surprising move, the Finnish company has now decided to discontinue its mobile money business in India.

Nokia had entered the business in 2010 through a partnership with YES Bank. Later, it joined hands with Union Bank to offer services such as bill payments and money transfer. Nokia soon came up with its Nokia Money, which has some 2 lakh subscribers. These subscribers will be the first ones to bear the impact of the move. According to reports, the subscribers will be soon informed about Nokia discontinuing the service. The subscribers will be asked to use up the money deposited in the mobile money account. However, the company will continue the service next 3-4 months so that subscribers have enough time to use up the money. Moreover, the company will refund the registration fee collected from the subscribers. It is also going to approach the Reserve Bank of India to surrender the licence it took for launching the service.

According to reports, subscribers using the YES Bank and Union Bank services will not suffer as the two banks will take over the platform. Nokia is going to rope in another player to help these banks maintain the payment service.

Nokia’s decision to shun its mobile business has surprised many as it comes at a time when the mobile payment service is becoming an increasingly vital tool in a business’ armoury in India. It’s notable that three new mobile payment services were launched over the last month by different service providers – Airtel, HDFC, MasterCard and Visa.

Nokia’s Mobile World Congress Lineup Revealed?

March 2nd, 2012

We’ve gotten wind of the names, but not the details, of the handsets Nokia reportedly plans on revealing later this month at Barcelona’s Mobile World Congress. The six devices are supposedly split evenly among smartphones — two Windows Phones and a Symbian — and three S60 S40 featurephones. Specifically, we’re now expecting the global version of the Lumia 900, an entry-level handset dubbed the Lumia 610, and the Nokia 808 PureView, which has been rumored as a full touchscreen successor to the camera-centric N8. Also tipped were the Asha 302, Asha 203, and Asha 202.

As for the Windows Phones, we’ve already seen the 900 introduced at CES for AT&T; moreover, we were tipped a few months back on a handset that claimed to be the Lumia 601 (not 610), but whose renders appeared somewhat suspect. That imagery had the phone looking very much like a keypad-less X3 which, while certainly a possibility, doesn’t seem to fall in line with the company’s latest smartphone design language.

Nokia Money: Is India ready to switch to a mobile payment solution?

December 20th, 2011

It is quite surprising that while several established banks and marketing companies offer a raft of services, most are not actively looking to cash in on an important, and soon to be vital, part of any business: the ability to make and accept mobile payments. Mobile payments are now becoming an increasingly vital tool in a business’ armoury. It is projected that mobile payments are going to replace plastic, or even hard currency, as the primary medium of monetary exchange in the next five years. This particular method is poised to change the way consumers buy goods and services.

Quite a few banks have their payment apps for smartphones, however, in a country like in India where feature phones are still majority, the concept of apps will not work for the masses. Several payment solution providers are seeking to address this problem. Nokia, the manufacturer of some of the most widely used mobile phones in the country, is also seeking to address the issue with its recently launched its mobile payment service, Nokia Money. The Nokia Money works with feature phones and allows most basic monetary transactions ranging from mobile top-ups to ticket booking, without the necessity of having a bank account.

Nokia’s mobile wallet service is aimed at rural India, where most of the people do not have a bank account or don’t own a smartphone, personal computer or credit/debit cards. Nokia also aims to simplify lives of people by giving them a secure and convenient method of paying their utility bills. Prior to the launch, Nokia had conducted a successful field test for about a year in areas such as Pune, Nashik and Chandigarh. The company partnered with YES Bank and Union Bank of India to provide the service.

How Nokia Money works?

As mentioned earlier, you do not need to have a bank account to avail the Nokia Money services. All you have to do is visit a local authorised Nokia retailer, who will embed the service on your phone. Then you have to pay cash to the agent and get the digital cash transferred to your phone via an instant SMS message. There are two types of accounts you can opt for – Easy Pay and Easy Send.

Easy Pay is the basic version of the service in which you can pay settle utility bills, phone top-ups, insurance premiums and tickets among other payments through a SMS.

Easy Send is however a more sophisticated account and includes additional services in addition to those provided by Easy Pay. In this process, sign up is required and you may need to furnish proofs for ID, signature and address. Besides the basic monetary transaction, Easy Send lets you send money to other Nokia Money users. You can also use the service as ATM and pay money to retailers, who are member of the service.
See below a demo of how the Nokia Money works.
